چکیده

Presently, there are many population models in existence, but these are often case specific, function at a single spatial scale and fail to tackle the complexity arising from individual actions and interactions that exist in the real-world. A spatially explicit agent-based simulation model has been developed to represent aphid population dynamics in agricultural landscapes. Over time, the aphid agents interact with the landscape and with one another. The construction of the model is detailed, including parameterisation and coupling to a geographical information system (GIS). The results show that a spatial modelling approach that considers both landscape properties and factors such as wind speed and direction provides greater insight into aphid population dynamics both spatially and temporally. This forms the basis for the development of further simulation models that can be used to analyse how changes in landscape structure impact upon important species distributions and population dynamics.

Managing agricultural landscapes for favouring ecosystem services provided by biodiversity: a spatially explicit model of crop rotations in the GAMA simulation platform

The need to reduce the use of chemical inputs in agricultural ecosystems requires studying integrated ecological processes and developing new tools helping to manage them. In particular, designing landscape management strategies is a new way to improve the efficiency of services provided by biodiversity as biological control or pollination. Individual-based models are useful to better understan...

Identification of RNA-binding sites in artemin based on docking energy landscapes and molecular dynamics simulation

There are questions concerning the functions of artemin, an abundant stress protein found in Artemiaduring embryo development. It has been reported that artemin binds RNA at high temperatures in vitro, suggesting an RNA protective role. In this study, we investigated the possibility of the presence of RNA-bindingsites and their structural properties in artemin, using docking energy ...

Agent-Based Modeling of Human-Induced Spread of Invasive Species in Agricultural Landscapes: Insights from the Potato Moth in Ecuador

Agent-based models (ABM) are ideal tools to deal with the complexity of pest invasion throughout agricultural socio-ecological systems, yet very few studies have applied them in such context. In this work we developed an ABM that simulates interactions between farmers and an invasive insect pest in an agricultural landscape of the tropical Andes. Our specific aims were to use the model 1) to as...

Landscape diversity enhances biological control of an introduced crop pest in the north-central USA.

Arthropod predators and parasitoids provide valuable ecosystem services in agricultural crops by suppressing populations of insect herbivores. Many natural enemies are influenced by non-crop habitat surrounding agricultural fields, and understanding if, and at what scales, land use patterns influence natural enemies is essential to predicting how landscape alters biological control services. He...

Pest control of aphids depends on landscape complexity and natural enemy interactions.

Aphids are a major concern in agricultural crops worldwide, and control by natural enemies is an essential component of the ecological intensification of agriculture. Although the complexity of agricultural landscapes is known to influence natural enemies of pests, few studies have measured the degree of pest control by different enemy guilds across gradients in landscape complexity. Here, we u...
